What Is an XML Sitemap and Do I Need One?

An XML sitemap lists the pages on your website for search engines. Learn what it contains, whether a small business needs one and how to create and submit it.

What Is an XML Sitemap and Do I Need One?

Short answer: An XML sitemap is a file that lists the important pages on your website so search engines can find them more easily. Small sites with good internal links can get by without one, but it costs nothing, helps Google discover new pages, and is considered good practice.

What it looks like

An XML sitemap is not meant for human visitors. It is a plain text file written in a structured format. A simple entry looks like this:

<url><loc>https://www.example.com/boiler-repair</loc><lastmod>2026-09-01</lastmod></url>

Each page gets an entry with its address and, optionally, the date it was last changed. The file usually lives at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.

XML sitemap versus HTML sitemap

An HTML sitemap is a normal page listing links for visitors. An XML sitemap is for search engines. Most small business sites do not need an HTML sitemap if the menu is clear, but an XML sitemap is still useful.

When a sitemap really helps

  • Your site is brand new and has few links pointing to it.
  • You have lots of pages, such as a blog or many location pages.
  • Some pages are not linked well from your menu.
  • You add or update content often and want changes noticed.

For a five page site with a clear menu, Google will likely find everything anyway. The sitemap is a safety net.

Every SiteDrum site comes with a sitemap set up and submitted to Google.

SiteDrum builds fast, mobile-first websites from $99 setup and $15 a month, with hosting, security, Google setup and support included. Already have a site that is slow or broken? Try Website Rescue or run our free speed test.

How to create one

Website builders and WordPress

Wix, Squarespace and Shopify generate sitemaps automatically. WordPress creates a basic one by default, and SEO plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math offer more control.

Custom or static sites

Your developer can generate one with a build script or a free online generator. It needs updating whenever pages are added or removed.

What to include and leave out

  • Include: pages you want found in search, like your homepage, services, about, contact and blog posts.
  • Leave out: thank you pages, login pages, duplicate pages and anything marked noindex.

Only list the final, canonical version of each page, using https.

How to submit it

  1. Open Google Search Console for your site.
  2. Go to Sitemaps in the menu.
  3. Type the sitemap address and click Submit.
  4. Check the status says Success.

You can also add a line to your robots.txt file pointing to the sitemap, which helps other search engines find it.

Common problems

  • Sitemap lists pages that return errors or redirects.
  • Old sitemap left in place after a redesign.
  • Pages in the sitemap are blocked by robots.txt.

If your site has a tangle of issues like these, our Website Rescue service can sort them out.

The bottom line

An XML sitemap is a simple list of your pages for search engines. It will not boost rankings by itself, but it helps Google find and understand your site. Make sure you have one, keep it clean and submit it in Search Console.

Frequently asked questions

Does a sitemap improve rankings?

Not directly. It helps pages get discovered and indexed, which is a step before ranking.

Where is my sitemap?

Try yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml or yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml. Your robots.txt may also list it.

How often should I update it?

Whenever pages are added or removed. Most platforms do this automatically.

Can I have more than one sitemap?

Yes. Larger sites often use a sitemap index that links to several smaller sitemaps.
