How Do I Redesign My Website Without Losing SEO?

A practical checklist for redesigning or moving a website without losing Google rankings: URL mapping, redirects, content and testing.

How Do I Redesign My Website Without Losing SEO?

Short answer: keep your best content, map every old URL to a new one, add 301 redirects, keep titles and headings for important pages, and test thoroughly before and after launch.

Before the redesign

  1. Export all current URLs and their traffic from Search Console.
  2. Identify your top pages and keywords.
  3. Save current titles, descriptions and headings.
  4. Benchmark speed and rankings.

During the build

  • Keep URLs the same where possible.
  • Do not delete pages that rank without a replacement.
  • Keep or improve content on key pages.
  • Block the staging site from search engines.

At launch

  1. Add 301 redirects from every changed URL.
  2. Remove staging noindex tags.
  3. Submit the new sitemap.
  4. Check for broken links and errors.
