How long until a new website appears on Google? Typical timelines for indexing and ranking, why it takes time, and how to speed things up.

How Long Does It Take for a New Website to Show Up on Google?

Short answer: a new website can be indexed by Google within days, but ranking well for competitive searches usually takes weeks to months. Indexing means Google knows your page exists. Ranking means it shows your page for searches people actually make.

Indexing versus ranking

Indexing is Google discovering and storing your pages. Ranking is where those pages appear for a search. A page can be indexed and still sit on page five for months.

Why it takes time

  • New domains have little history or trust.
  • Google needs to crawl and understand your pages.
  • Few other sites link to you yet.
  • Competitors may have years of content and reviews.

How to speed it up

  1. Verify your site in Google Search Console and submit your XML sitemap.
  2. Use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing for key pages.
  3. Link your website from your Google Business Profile and social profiles.
  4. Make sure pages are fast, mobile-friendly and not blocked by robots.txt.
  5. Publish helpful content that answers real questions.
  6. Get a few genuine links from directories, partners and local organisations.

How to check if you are indexed

Search Google for site:yourdomain.com. Any pages listed are indexed. Search Console's Pages report gives more detail on which pages are and are not indexed, and why.

The bottom line

Getting indexed is quick when you set things up properly. Ranking takes patience and consistent effort, but a fast, well structured site with useful content gets there sooner.
