What Is Domain Authority and Does It Matter?
Domain authority is a third party score estimating a site's ranking strength. Learn what it means, why Google does not use it and what to focus on instead.

Short answer: Domain authority is a score from SEO software companies, not Google, that estimates how strong a website's link profile is. It can be a handy comparison tool, but Google does not use it, and for most small local businesses it matters far less than reviews, relevance and a good website.
Where the term comes from
'Domain Authority' is a metric created by Moz. Other tools have their own versions with different names, such as Ahrefs' Domain Rating or Semrush's Authority Score. They all work in a similar way: they look at the links pointing to a site and produce a number, usually from 0 to 100, predicting how well it might rank.
What Google says
Google has repeatedly said it does not use these third party scores. It has its own internal signals, which are far more complex. So raising your domain authority does not directly raise your rankings. It is a thermometer, not the heating.
When the score is useful
- Comparing competitors: if every site above you scores much higher, links might be part of the gap.
- Judging link opportunities: a link from a well established local news site is likely worth more than one from a brand new blog.
- Tracking trends: a slow rise over time suggests you are earning links.
When it is misleading
- Scores differ between tools, so a 30 in one may be a 15 in another.
- They are relative: the scale gets harder to climb near the top.
- They ignore local factors like your Google Business Profile, reviews and distance.
- They can be gamed by spammy links, which Google may ignore entirely.

Why local businesses can ignore it mostly
A local cleaner with a domain score of 10 can easily beat a national chain with 70 in the Google map pack for searches in their town. Local results lean heavily on proximity, reviews and relevance. Many map pack winners have very modest link profiles.
Beware of sellers
You may get emails offering to 'boost your DA to 50' for a fee. These usually involve low quality links that inflate the number without helping, and sometimes harming, your real rankings. Treat them as spam.
What to focus on instead
- A complete, accurate Google Business Profile.
- Steady genuine reviews.
- Clear service pages that answer customer questions.
- A fast, mobile-friendly site. Check yours with our speed test.
- A handful of real local links from partners, suppliers and community groups.
Do these well and any authority score you check will likely rise naturally as a side effect.
The bottom line
Domain authority is a useful rough guide for comparing link strength, but it is not a Google ranking factor and not a goal in itself. Small businesses should spend their energy on the things customers and Google actually respond to.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google use domain authority?
No. It is a third party metric. Google uses its own signals.
What is a good domain authority score?
It is relative. Compare yourself with competitors in your area rather than chasing a fixed number.
How do I check my domain authority?
Tools like Moz, Ahrefs and Semrush offer free checkers with limited use.
Can I buy a higher domain authority?
Services that sell it usually rely on low quality links, which can harm rather than help.
