How Do I Get My Website on the First Page of Google?

How to get your small business website onto page one of Google: realistic steps covering local SEO, content, speed, reviews and links.

How Do I Get My Website on the First Page of Google?

Short answer: focus on searches you can realistically win, usually local and specific ones, then build a fast site with a page for each service, a complete Google Business Profile, genuine reviews and helpful content. Nobody can guarantee first page rankings, but these steps give you the best chance.

1. Target the right searches

"Web design" nationally is hard. "Emergency plumber in Croydon" is achievable. Pick specific services plus locations that real customers search for.

2. Build a page for each service and area

One page per main service, with unique, useful content, gives Google a clear match for each search.

3. Nail the basics on every page

  • A descriptive title tag and meta description.
  • One clear H1 with the main keyword.
  • Helpful text answering what customers want to know.
  • Internal links to related pages.
  • Structured data such as LocalBusiness and FAQ.

4. Be fast on mobile

Pass Core Web Vitals and aim for a mobile PageSpeed score of 90 or more.

5. Strengthen your Google Business Profile

Choose accurate categories, add photos, post updates and collect reviews regularly.

6. Earn genuine links

Local directories, suppliers, trade associations and local news can link to you. Quality beats quantity.

7. Publish helpful answers

Write articles answering the questions customers ask before they buy. These pages attract searches and build trust.

The bottom line

First page rankings come from relevance, quality and trust built over time. Start specific, build a fast and clear site, and keep adding helpful content.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone guarantee first page on Google?

No. Be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed rankings.

How long does it take to reach page one?

It depends on competition. Local niches can take weeks to months; competitive terms take longer.

Do I need to blog to rank?

Not always, but helpful content broadens the searches you can appear for.

Are paid ads part of SEO?

No. Ads are separate. They can bring traffic while SEO builds up.
