Does a Private Tutor or Tuition Centre Need a Website?

Do tutors and tuition centres need a website when platforms exist? How parents search, what to include, safeguarding checks, results and pricing advice.

Does a Private Tutor or Tuition Centre Need a Website?

Short answer: If you rely only on tutoring platforms, you are paying commission on every lesson and competing on price. A simple website lets parents find you directly, see your results and contact you without a middleman. For tuition centres, it is essential.

Platform or your own site?

Tutoring marketplaces are useful for getting started, but they usually take a cut of each lesson and make it easy for parents to compare you with dozens of cheaper tutors. Your own site puts you on your own page, with no competitors in the sidebar. Many tutors use both: platforms for new leads, their website for direct bookings and referrals.

How parents search

Parents search by subject, level and exam, plus location:

  • "maths tutor [town]"
  • "11 plus tutor near me" (UK grammar school entrance)
  • "GCSE chemistry tutor online"
  • "SAT prep tutor [city]" (US)
  • "HSC English tutor" (Australia)
  • "dyslexia tutor"

Every exam or level you teach is a page opportunity.

What to put on the site

  • Subjects and levels: be specific. "Maths" is weak. "GCSE and A level maths, all exam boards" is strong.
  • Online, in person or both: and where you travel if in person.
  • Your background: degree, teaching experience, examiner experience if any.
  • Results and progress stories: grade improvements with permission, never with full names of minors.
  • Prices and packages: per hour, block discounts, group rates.
  • How lessons work: first session, homework, progress updates to parents.

Stop paying commission on every lesson. Get your own tutoring site.

Safeguarding and trust

Parents are trusting you with their child. Address that head on:

  • State that you hold a current background check where applicable: an enhanced DBS check in the UK, a Working with Children Check in Australia, a police vulnerable sector check in Canada, or the equivalent where you are
  • Explain your policy on lesson location and parent presence for in-person sessions
  • Have a clear privacy notice, since you will collect children's details

This is general information, not legal advice. Check the requirements in your area.

For tuition centres

A centre needs a bit more: a timetable or class schedule, tutor profiles, a trial lesson booking form, term dates, and photos of the learning space. Parents comparing centres look closely at class sizes and how progress is reported, so explain both.

The insider tip: time your content with the school calendar

Tutoring demand is seasonal. Parents start searching in September after the summer, again after mock exam results in winter, and in a panic before exams in spring. Update your homepage message for each season, such as "places available for mock exam preparation", and post a short guide before each peak. A site with easy edits makes this a two minute job.

Keep it clean and fast

Parents often browse at night on a phone. A simple site with a clear contact form beats a cluttered one. Have a look at our sample sites for clean layouts that suit education businesses.

The bottom line

A tutor needs a website to escape platform commission and win direct referrals. A tuition centre needs one to compete at all. Be specific about subjects and levels, show your checks and qualifications, and update the message as the school year turns.

Frequently asked questions

Do tutors need a website if they use tutoring platforms?

Platforms are useful, but your own site avoids commission and lets parents contact you without comparing you to cheaper tutors.

Should a tutor show prices online?

Usually yes. Parents shortlist on price and availability, and clear pricing reduces time wasting enquiries.

What background checks should a tutor mention?

Whatever applies where you work, such as an enhanced DBS check in the UK or a Working with Children Check in Australia.

When do parents look for tutors?

Peaks tend to be early in the school year, after mock exams and in the run up to exams.
