What Is Website Uptime and How Much Should I Expect?

Website uptime is the share of time your site is online. Learn what 99.9% really means, what causes downtime, and how to monitor your small business site.

What Is Website Uptime and How Much Should I Expect?

Short answer: Uptime is the percentage of time your website is online and working. Decent hosting should deliver around 99.9% or better, which still allows several hours of downtime a year. What matters most is that problems are spotted quickly and fixed fast.

What the percentages really mean

Hosting companies love quoting uptime figures, but the decimals hide big differences. Here is roughly how much downtime each level allows:

  • 99%: about 3.65 days offline a year, or over 7 hours a month.
  • 99.9%: about 8.8 hours a year, or around 43 minutes a month.
  • 99.99%: about 53 minutes a year.

For most small businesses, 99.9% is a sensible target. Chasing 99.99% usually means paying for enterprise infrastructure you do not need. But 99% is not good enough: a whole day offline during a busy week is a real loss.

What causes downtime

Hosting problems

Cheap shared hosting puts hundreds of sites on one server. If a neighbour gets a traffic spike or is hacked, your site can slow down or go offline with it.

Software and plugins

On platforms like WordPress, a faulty update to a theme or plugin can break the whole site, sometimes showing a blank white screen.

Expired domain or SSL

If your domain registration lapses, the site disappears completely. If your SSL certificate expires, visitors see a scary security warning that is effectively downtime.

Attacks and traffic surges

Malicious traffic floods or a sudden burst of real visitors can overwhelm a small server.

Hosting, SSL and monitoring included, so your site stays up while you work.

Why downtime costs more than the minutes

The direct cost is obvious: anyone trying to call, book or buy during an outage cannot. The hidden costs are worse. A customer who finds a broken site may assume you have closed. If Google's crawler visits during a long outage, repeated failures can temporarily affect how your pages are shown. And if you take bookings or payments online, every minute offline is lost revenue.

How to monitor your uptime

You should never learn about an outage from a customer. Uptime monitoring services check your site from several locations every few minutes and alert you by email or text if it stops responding. Many offer a free plan that checks one or a few sites at five-minute intervals, which is plenty for most small businesses.

When setting up monitoring:

  1. Monitor your homepage and one key page, such as your contact or booking page.
  2. Send alerts to a phone number or email you check, not an old inbox.
  3. Look at the monthly report. Lots of short blips suggest your hosting is struggling.

What to look for in a host

  • A clear uptime commitment, ideally with service credits if they miss it.
  • Automatic backups so a broken update can be rolled back in minutes.
  • Support that responds quickly when something goes wrong.
  • Auto-renewing SSL certificates and domain renewal reminders.

All SiteDrum plans include managed hosting, SSL and monitoring, so if something does go wrong, we are on it before you notice. If your current site keeps going down, our Website Rescue service can find out why.

The bottom line

Uptime is simply the share of time your site works. Aim for hosting that delivers 99.9% or better, set up free monitoring so you hear about problems first, and keep your domain and SSL on auto-renew. Reliable beats flashy every time.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good uptime percentage?

Around 99.9% or higher is a good standard for a small business website. That allows roughly 43 minutes of downtime a month.

How do I know if my website is down?

Use an uptime monitoring service that checks your site every few minutes and alerts you by email or text. Many have free plans for a small number of sites.

Does downtime affect Google rankings?

Brief outages rarely matter. Long or repeated outages can cause Google to temporarily drop pages it cannot reach, so fix recurring downtime quickly.

Why does my website keep going down?

Common causes include overloaded cheap shared hosting, faulty plugin or theme updates, expired SSL certificates or domains, and malicious traffic.
