What Is a Staging Site and Do I Need One?
A staging site is a private copy of your website for testing changes safely. Learn how staging works, when small businesses need it and how to use it.

Short answer: A staging site is a private copy of your live website where changes can be tested before the public sees them. It stops a bad update, plugin conflict or half-finished redesign from breaking the site customers use. Not every small business needs one, but anyone making regular changes on a platform like WordPress should have it.
Live vs staging: how it works
Your live site (sometimes called production) is the one at your real domain. A staging site is a clone that usually sits at a hidden address such as staging.yourbusiness.com, often password protected. The workflow looks like this:
- Copy the live site to staging.
- Make and test changes on staging.
- Check everything works on desktop and mobile.
- Push the approved changes to live.
If something breaks in step 2, no customer ever sees it.
Situations where staging saves you
Software updates
Updating WordPress core, themes and plugins is essential for security, but occasionally an update clashes with something else and breaks a page. Testing on staging first catches it.
Redesigns and new sections
You can build a new homepage or services page over a few weeks without visitors seeing half-built layouts.
New features
Adding online booking, a shop or a payment form? Staging lets you run test bookings and payments without confusing real customers.
Troubleshooting
A developer can switch plugins off and on to find a fault without taking the live site down.
Changes tested properly before they go live: that is how we look after every SiteDrum site.
SiteDrum builds fast, mobile-first websites from $99 setup and $15 a month, with hosting, security, Google setup and support included. Already have a site that is slow or broken? Try Website Rescue or run our free speed test.
Do you actually need one?
Honestly, it depends on how your site is built and how often it changes.
- You probably need staging if: you run WordPress or a similar CMS with lots of plugins, you sell online, or you make frequent changes.
- You probably do not if: your site is a simple static site that is rarely changed, or you are on a managed service where the provider tests changes for you.
Hosted website builders often have no true staging, though some offer draft mode or version history, which covers basic needs.
How to get a staging site
- Through your host: many managed WordPress hosts include one-click staging. Check your control panel.
- With a plugin: some plugins can create a staging copy, though they can be fiddly on cheap hosting.
- Manually: a developer copies files and the database to a subdomain. This works anywhere but takes more skill.
Staging pitfalls to avoid
- Letting Google index it: block staging from search engines with a password or noindex setting, or you risk duplicate content.
- Overwriting new live data: if customers placed orders or sent form entries while you worked on staging, pushing the whole database back could wipe them. Push files and settings carefully.
- Sending real emails: staging copies may email real customers if order or form notifications are still switched on.
- Forgetting to remove it: old, unpatched staging sites can become a security hole.
With a SiteDrum plan, edits are handled by our team and checked before going live, so you get the benefit of staging without managing it yourself.
The bottom line
A staging site is a safe rehearsal space for your website. If you run a plugin-heavy CMS, sell online or update often, it is worth having. Keep it hidden from Google, be careful with live data when pushing changes, and delete it when it is no longer needed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between staging and live?
The live site is the public version at your domain. Staging is a private copy for testing changes before they reach customers.
Will Google index my staging site?
It can if it is publicly accessible. Protect it with a password or a noindex setting so it does not appear in search results.
Does Wix or Squarespace have staging?
Most hosted builders do not offer full staging, though they let you edit before publishing and some keep version history.
Can pushing staging to live delete orders?
Yes, if you overwrite the live database with an older staging copy. Push files and settings carefully on sites that take orders or bookings.
