Website Prices in South Africa 2026: Once-Off vs Monthly Plans Compared
Rand prices from a 2026 agency survey, what a R299 per month website plan really includes, and when a once-off build is the better deal for SA businesses.

South Africa has two ways to buy a website: pay once for the build, or pay a monthly fee that includes the site, hosting and support. Both are common, and the right choice depends on your cash flow and how often your business changes.
Once-off website prices
A 2026 survey of South African agencies found:
Basic small business sites: from about R399 up to R6,995, with an average of about R3,765 for one page and about R6,664 for five pages.
Mid-range business sites: about R7,000 to R15,000.
Online shops: from about R1,999 to R25,000, averaging around R8,445.
Hosting typically adds around R100 or more a month on top.
Monthly website plans
The same survey found monthly plans ranging from about R150 to R999 a month, averaging around R400. These usually bundle the design, hosting, security and some updates, with no big upfront fee. Searches like "how much is a website per month" show how popular this model is.
Which is better?
Choose once-off if you have the cash now, your content rarely changes, and you are comfortable managing hosting and renewals yourself or with a developer you trust.
Choose monthly if you want no upfront cost, regular updates, and someone else responsible for keeping the site online and secure. Over two to three years the totals are often similar, but monthly plans spread the cost and remove the risk of the site going offline.
Questions to ask about any monthly plan
Is there a long contract or can you cancel? Who owns the domain if you leave? How many updates a month are included? Is the design mobile-first and fast on mobile data? Do you get your own .co.za or .com address? Some cheap plans lock you in for 12 to 24 months or keep the domain, so read the terms.
What South African customers expect to see
Clear prices, a WhatsApp button, your area on Google Maps, and reviews. People searching "web designers Cape Town" or "website design Durban" compare several options fast, so a site that loads quickly and answers questions on the first screen wins the enquiry.
