Your domain name is your address on the internet, like yourbusiness.com.ng. It appears on your website, your email and your business cards. Choosing the right one, and keeping control of it, matters more than most business owners realise.
The most popular choice for Nigerian businesses. It tells customers immediately that you are Nigerian, and it is usually the cheapest option, often a few thousand naira a year.
Shorter and more modern looking, but usually more expensive each year. A good choice if your exact name is available and you want something memorable.
The global standard. Best if you sell to customers outside Nigeria, serve the diaspora, or plan to expand to other countries. Short .com names are harder to find.
If your budget allows, register your main choice and the matching .com.ng so nobody else can take it.
Nigerian domains are managed by NiRA (the Nigeria Internet Registration Association) and sold through accredited registrars. You search for the name, pay for one or more years, and the domain is registered in your name. International domains like .com can be bought from registrars worldwide.
Keep it short and easy to spell when said out loud. Avoid hyphens and numbers. Use your business name if possible, or your name plus your service or city, like glowhairlagos.com.ng. Check that the same name is free on Instagram and Facebook too.
Many businesses let a designer register the domain in the designer's own name. When the relationship ends, the business loses its web address and email. Always make sure the domain is registered in your name or your company's name, and that you know where it is renewed.
Domains must be renewed every year. If a renewal is missed, your website and business email stop working, and in some cases someone else can register the name. Turn on auto-renew, or use a provider that renews it for you as part of a monthly plan.
The domain is the address. Hosting is the space where your website lives. The website is what customers see. You need all three. With SiteDrum, hosting and your website are included in the monthly plan, and we help you choose and connect the right domain.
Prices vary by registrar, but .com.ng is usually the cheapest Nigerian option, often a few thousand naira a year. A .ng domain typically costs more.
Yes. Domains can be transferred between registrars, as long as the domain is registered in your name and you have access to the account.
For a professional business site, yes. Your own domain builds trust and gives you a matching business email address.
