What Is Website Caching and How Does It Speed Up My Site?
Website caching stores ready copies of pages and files so they load faster. Learn about browser, server and CDN caching, and how to clear cache when needed.

Short answer: Caching means storing a ready-made copy of something so it does not have to be fetched or built again. On websites, caching happens in the visitor's browser, on your server and on CDNs. It makes pages load much faster and reduces server load. The trade-off is that changes may not appear immediately until the cache is cleared.
An everyday analogy
Imagine a cafe that makes the same sandwich fifty times a day. Instead of making each one from scratch when ordered, it prepares a batch in the morning and keeps them in the fridge. Customers get served instantly. Caching does the same for your website: popular pages and files are prepared once and handed out quickly.
The main types of caching
Browser caching
When someone visits your site, their browser saves files such as your logo, stylesheets and scripts. On the next page or next visit, it reuses them instead of downloading again. Your server controls this with Cache-Control headers that say how long each file can be kept.
Page caching (server side)
Dynamic sites like WordPress normally build each page from the database on every visit. A page cache saves the finished HTML, so later visitors get the stored copy instantly. This can turn a sluggish site into a quick one.
Object and database caching
Stores the results of frequent database queries in memory, so the server does not repeat the same work. Useful for busier or more complex sites such as shops.
CDN caching
A content delivery network keeps copies of your files on servers around the world, so visitors get them from a nearby location.
Fast by default: SiteDrum sites come with caching and a CDN already tuned.
SiteDrum builds fast, mobile-first websites from $99 setup and $15 a month, with hosting, security, Google setup and support included. Already have a site that is slow or broken? Try Website Rescue or run our free speed test.
Why caching matters for your business
- Speed: faster pages keep visitors from leaving and support better Core Web Vitals scores.
- Stability: a cached site copes far better with a sudden rush of visitors, such as after a local news mention.
- Lower costs: less server work can mean cheaper hosting.
The downside: stale content
Because copies are stored, a change you make might not show straight away. You update your opening hours, refresh the page and still see the old ones. Nothing is broken. You are looking at a cached copy. This is the most common caching confusion for owners.
How to see your latest changes
- Hard refresh: press Ctrl and F5 on Windows, or Cmd, Shift and R on a Mac, to bypass your browser cache.
- Try a private window or a different device.
- Clear the site cache: in your caching plugin or hosting dashboard, use the "purge" or "clear cache" button.
- Purge the CDN if you use one.
Setting caching up well
- Long cache for files that rarely change: logos, fonts and images can be cached for months. Developers rename the file (or add a version number) when it changes, so browsers fetch the new one.
- Shorter cache for HTML pages: so updates appear reasonably quickly.
- Exclude personal pages: carts, checkouts, account areas and form confirmation pages should never be cached, or visitors could see someone else's details.
- One caching plugin only: on WordPress, running two caching plugins at once often causes conflicts.
Caching will not fix everything
Caching speeds up delivery, but if your pages are bloated with huge images and heavy scripts, the first load will still be slow. Pair caching with image optimisation and lean code. Want to see how your site performs right now? Try our free speed test.
The bottom line
Caching stores ready copies of your pages and files in browsers, on servers and on CDNs, making your site faster and more robust. Set long caching for static files, keep personal pages uncached, and remember to clear the cache when your changes do not show up.
Frequently asked questions
What does clearing the cache do?
It removes stored copies so the browser or server fetches fresh versions, which is why it often makes recent changes appear.
Why are my website changes not showing?
You are probably seeing a cached copy. Do a hard refresh, try a private window, and purge your site or CDN cache.
Is caching safe for online shops?
Yes, if carts, checkout and account pages are excluded from caching. Product and information pages can be cached safely.
Do I need a caching plugin?
On WordPress and similar dynamic sites, usually yes, unless your host provides server-level caching. Static sites need less, as they are already pre-built.
