What Is Website Accessibility and What Is WCAG?
Website accessibility means everyone can use your site, including people with disabilities. A practical guide to WCAG and quick fixes for small businesses.

Short answer: Website accessibility means building your site so people with visual, hearing, motor or cognitive impairments can use it. WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is the international standard that defines what "accessible" looks like. Most fixes are simple, help every visitor, and often improve SEO too. This is general information, not legal advice.
Who accessibility is for
It is easy to picture accessibility as something for a tiny minority. In reality it covers a lot of your customers:
- People who are blind or have low vision and use screen readers or zoom.
- People with colour blindness who cannot tell red from green buttons.
- People who cannot use a mouse and navigate with a keyboard or voice.
- Deaf or hard of hearing visitors watching your videos.
- Older customers with shaky hands, tired eyes or less confidence online.
- Anyone on a phone in bright sunlight or with one hand full.
WCAG in plain English
WCAG is published by the W3C, the body that sets web standards. It is organised around four principles, often shortened to POUR:
- Perceivable: people can see or hear the content, for example images have alt text and videos have captions.
- Operable: everything works with a keyboard, and nothing flashes or moves too fast.
- Understandable: text is clear, forms explain errors, and navigation is predictable.
- Robust: the code works with assistive technologies like screen readers.
Each guideline has levels: A (minimum), AA (the usual target) and AAA (the strictest). When people say a site "meets WCAG", they usually mean level AA of a recent version such as 2.1 or 2.2.
Is it a legal requirement?
It depends on where you are and what kind of organisation you run. Many countries have equality or disability laws that can apply to websites, and some have specific rules for public bodies or larger companies. The European Accessibility Act, for instance, covers certain products and services sold in the EU. Requirements vary, so if you are unsure, check with a qualified adviser. Either way, aiming for WCAG AA is good practice.

Quick wins you can check today
Colour contrast
Light grey text on white looks stylish and is hard to read. Use a free contrast checker; WCAG AA asks for a ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 for normal text.
Alt text on images
Describe meaningful images so screen readers can announce them. Decorative images should have empty alt text so they are skipped.
Keyboard test
Put your mouse aside and press Tab through your homepage. Can you reach the menu, buttons and form? Can you see where you are? If focus disappears, that is a problem.
Proper headings
Use real heading tags in order (H1, then H2, then H3), not just big bold text. Screen reader users jump between headings to scan a page.
Form labels
Every field needs a visible label, not just placeholder text that vanishes when you type.
Link text
"Click here" tells a screen reader user nothing. "View our pricing" does.
Avoid overlay quick fixes
Some tools promise instant compliance with a single line of script that adds an accessibility widget. Many accessibility experts and disabled users criticise these overlays because they do not fix underlying problems and can interfere with assistive technology. Fixing the site itself is the reliable route.
If your current site fails basic checks, our Website Rescue service can address contrast, headings, labels and alt text as part of a clean-up.
The bottom line
Accessibility means everyone can use your website, and WCAG is the checklist that defines how. Start with contrast, alt text, keyboard navigation, headings and form labels. These fixes help disabled visitors, older customers and search engines all at once.
Frequently asked questions
What does WCAG stand for?
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, the international standard published by the W3C for making websites usable by people with disabilities.
What WCAG level should a small business aim for?
Level AA of a recent version is the common target. It covers the most important issues without the strictest AAA requirements.
Do accessibility overlay widgets make my site compliant?
They are widely criticised by accessibility experts and do not fix underlying issues. Fixing contrast, structure, labels and alt text directly is more reliable.
Is website accessibility a legal requirement?
It depends on your country, sector and size. Many disability and equality laws can apply. This is general information, not legal advice, so check with a qualified adviser.
