Schema Markup and AI Search: Structured Data for Modern Websites

A practical guide to JSON-LD structured data in 2026: which schema types matter for businesses, how it supports rich results and AI answer engines, and how to implement and test it.

Search has changed. Alongside the familiar blue links, people now get answers from AI overviews and assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. These systems need to understand exactly what a business is, what it offers, where it operates and what it costs. Structured data is one of the clearest ways to tell them.

What schema markup is

Schema markup is a vocabulary from schema.org that describes the things on a page in a machine readable format. The recommended way to add it is JSON-LD: a block of JSON inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag. It sits alongside your HTML without changing how the page looks.

The schema types that matter most for businesses

Organization or LocalBusiness: name, logo, URL, contact details, address, opening hours and social profiles using sameAs. Use a specific subtype such as Dentist or Plumber where one fits.
Service: what you provide, the area served and the provider.
Offer and PriceSpecification: clear pricing in a structured form.
FAQPage: question and answer pairs that already appear visibly on the page.
Article or BlogPosting: headline, author, publisher and dates for content pages.
BreadcrumbList: the page's place in your site hierarchy.
Review and AggregateRating: only for genuine reviews displayed on the page, following Google's guidelines.

  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "LocalBusiness",
  "name": "Example Studio",
  "url": "https://example.com",
  "telephone": "+44 20 0000 0000",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "addressLocality": "London",
    "addressCountry": "GB"
  },
  "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 09:00-18:00",
  "sameAs": ["https://www.linkedin.com/company/example"]
}

Rich results versus understanding

Some schema types can unlock visual enhancements in Google, such as breadcrumbs or review stars. Google has narrowed which types get rich results over time, so do not add markup purely hoping for stars. The bigger, lasting benefit is entity understanding: helping search engines and AI systems confidently connect your business name, services, location and reputation.

Optimising for AI answer engines

Sometimes called generative engine optimisation, this is about making your content easy for AI systems to retrieve, trust and quote. Structured data is one part. The others are just as important:

Answer questions directly. Put a clear one or two sentence answer near the top of each section, then expand.
Use descriptive headings that mirror how people ask questions.
Be consistent. Your name, address, phone and prices should match everywhere: site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
Show specifics. Real prices, delivery times, service areas and processes are more quotable than vague claims.
Keep content crawlable. Server rendered or static HTML is easier for crawlers than content that only appears after JavaScript runs.
Check robots.txt so you are not accidentally blocking the crawlers of the assistants you want to appear in.

Implementation rules

Markup must describe content visible on the page. Hidden or misleading markup can lead to manual actions.
Generate JSON-LD from the same data as the page so they never drift apart.
Use one connected graph per page where possible, linking entities with @id.
Keep dates such as dateModified accurate.

How to test

Run key pages through Google's Rich Results Test.
Validate syntax with the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org.
Monitor the Enhancements reports in Google Search Console for errors after each deploy.

The bottom line

Structured data turns your website into clean, machine readable facts. Combined with direct answers, consistent business details and crawlable HTML, it gives both traditional search and AI assistants the confidence to show and recommend your business.

Frequently asked questions

Does schema markup improve rankings directly?

Not directly. It helps search engines understand your content and can enable rich results, which may improve click-through rates.

JSON-LD, Microdata or RDFa: which should I use?

JSON-LD. Google recommends it, and it is easiest to maintain because it sits separately from your HTML.

Can schema help me appear in AI answers?

It helps AI systems understand your business accurately. Clear answers, consistent details and crawlable content matter just as much.

Can I add FAQ schema to every page?

Only where the questions and answers are visible on that page. Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of sites, but the markup still helps with understanding.
