How Do I Track My Google Rankings for Free?

Free ways to track your Google rankings: Search Console, Google Business Profile performance, manual checks done properly and free tool tiers.

How Do I Track My Google Rankings for Free?

Short answer: Google Search Console is the best free way to track rankings, as it shows the real searches your site appears for and your average position. For Maps, use the Performance section in your Google Business Profile. Add occasional manual checks done in a neutral way, and use free tiers of rank tracking tools if you want more detail.

Why checking on your own phone misleads you

Google personalises results based on your location, search history and device. If you search your business often, Google may show it higher for you than for a customer. That is why a quick check on your phone can give false reassurance or false alarm.

Method 1: Google Search Console

This is free and uses Google's own data.

  1. Open the Performance report.
  2. Switch on Average position along with clicks and impressions.
  3. Open the Queries tab to see each search term and its average position.
  4. Use the date filter to compare this month with last month, or the last three months with the previous three.
  5. Click a query and then the Pages tab to see which page ranks for it.

Note that average position is an average across many searches and locations, so treat it as a trend rather than an exact spot.

Method 2: Google Business Profile performance

Your profile shows how many people found you, which searches led to your profile and the calls, website clicks and direction requests you received. These numbers matter more than positions, because they are actual customer actions.

Method 3: Manual checks done properly

  • Use a private or incognito window.
  • Log out of your Google account.
  • Remember results still depend on location, so try from a few places or ask a friend in another part of town.
  • Write the results down in a spreadsheet with the date.

Limit this to a handful of key phrases once a month.

Method 4: Free tiers of tracking tools

Many SEO tools offer free plans or trials that track a small number of keywords. Some local tools show grid maps of how you rank across your area. Free limits change often, so check current plans. These are helpful for a snapshot, but Search Console remains your main source.

Build a simple monthly routine

  1. Export the top queries from Search Console into a spreadsheet.
  2. Note clicks, impressions and average position for your ten most important phrases.
  3. Record calls and website clicks from your Google Business Profile.
  4. Write a note about any changes you made that month, such as new pages or a run of reviews.

Over a few months this shows exactly what is working.

Focus on enquiries, not just positions

A position three ranking that brings calls is worth more than a position one for a phrase nobody uses. If you rank but get few enquiries, your website may be the weak link. Try our free speed test to see how quickly your pages load.

The bottom line

Search Console and your Google Business Profile give you free, reliable ranking and enquiry data. Add careful manual checks and free tool tiers if you like, track monthly, and judge success by real customer actions.
