Common Website Mistakes Small Businesses Make (And How to Fix Each One)

The most common small business website mistakes, from slow loading and hidden phone numbers to no pricing and broken forms, with a quick fix for each one.

Short answer: The biggest mistakes are slow pages, poor mobile layouts, hidden contact details, vague wording, no clear call to action and forms that quietly stop working. Most are cheap to fix once you know to look.

Mistake 1: The site is slow

Why it hurts: visitors on mobile data give up quickly, and speed is one of many things Google considers.

Fix: compress images, remove unused plugins and use decent hosting. Start with a free speed test to see the worst offenders.

Mistake 2: It does not work properly on phones

Why it hurts: a large share of local searches happen on phones. Tiny text and buttons drive people away.

Fix: test every page on your own phone. Make buttons big, text at least 16 pixels and menus simple.

Mistake 3: Contact details are hard to find

Fix: put a tap-to-call phone number in the header on mobile, and full details in the footer of every page.

Mistake 4: Visitors cannot tell what you do

A homepage headline like 'Excellence in every detail' says nothing.

Fix: say what you do and where in plain words: 'Roofing repairs and new roofs in Cardiff'.

Mistake 5: No clear call to action

Fix: give every page one obvious next step, such as 'Get a quote' or 'Book online', and repeat it.

Mistake 6: Forms that do not work

Forms break silently when settings change or emails go to spam. Some owners lose enquiries for months without knowing.

Fix: send yourself a test enquiry every month and check spam folders.

Mistake 7: Everything on one Services page

Fix: give each main service its own page so it can rank for searches and speak to that customer directly.

Mistake 8: No pricing information at all

Fix: share starting prices, typical ranges or how your quotes work. Even a little guidance helps visitors decide to contact you.

Mistake 9: Outdated content

Old prices, staff who left, a 2019 copyright line and a blog last updated years ago all suggest the business might be gone.

Fix: schedule a quick content review every few months.

Mistake 10: No proof

Fix: add reviews, photos of real work and any qualifications.

Mistake 11: Ignoring security and updates

Unpatched sites get hacked, then show warnings or redirect visitors elsewhere.

Fix: keep software updated, use strong passwords and keep backups, or use a managed service. If it has already happened, Website Rescue can clean it up.

Mistake 12: Not checking Google

Fix: set up Google Search Console and a Google Business Profile. They show how people find you and flag problems early.

Mistake 13: Designing for yourself, not customers

Autoplay videos, slideshows and clever animations often impress owners but annoy visitors.

Fix: ask a few customers to use the site and watch where they get stuck.

The bottom line

Most website problems are not about design taste; they are about speed, clarity and things quietly breaking. Work through this list once, fix what you find and set a reminder to check again in three months.
