Why Is My Domain Renewal So Expensive?

Why domain renewals cost more than year one: introductory discounts, bundled extras, premium domains and registrar markups, plus how to cut the cost safely.

Why Is My Domain Renewal So Expensive?

Short answer: Domains are often sold cheaply or free for the first year to win your business, then renew at a much higher standard rate. Some registrars also bundle extras like privacy or email, or charge higher prices for certain extensions. You can usually reduce the cost by comparing registrars or transferring, but never let the domain lapse.

The five usual reasons

1. Introductory pricing ended

Registrars commonly advertise a very low first-year price. The renewal rate is listed in small print and can be several times higher. This is the number one cause of renewal shock.

2. Free domain from a builder

Website builders such as Wix and Squarespace have often included a free domain for the first year with annual plans. In year two, the domain renews at the builder's rate, which may be higher than standalone registrars.

3. Bundled add-ons

Check your invoice for extras: privacy protection, email, SSL certificates, "domain protection" or website builders you never used. Some are useful, many are not, and several are free elsewhere.

4. The extension itself

Different endings cost different amounts. Common ones like .com and .co.uk are usually reasonable. Newer or niche extensions such as .io, .ai or some novelty endings can renew at much higher prices. Registry price increases also get passed on.

5. Premium domains

Some short or highly desirable names are classed as premium, with premium renewal prices every year, not just at purchase.

How to bring the cost down

  1. Read the invoice line by line. Remove add-ons you do not need.
  2. Compare renewal prices, not first-year prices. Look up the renewal rate at a few reputable registrars.
  3. Transfer to a cheaper registrar. Most transfers include a year's renewal at the new registrar's price. Check the rules for your extension.
  4. Ask for a discount. Some registrars will match or reduce prices if you say you plan to transfer.
  5. Renew for multiple years only once you are happy with the rate.

Before you transfer: a quick checklist

  • Make sure the domain is in your name, not your web designer's. Read who owns my website and domain.
  • Unlock the domain and get the transfer (EPP) code.
  • Note your current DNS records so email and website keep working.
  • Avoid transferring in the last few days before expiry.
  • Recently registered or transferred domains may have a short transfer lock.

Never let it expire

An expired domain takes down your website and email at the same time. After a grace period, restoring it can cost far more than the renewal. Worse, it can be bought by someone else. Turn on auto-renew and keep your card details current.

Is privacy protection worth paying for?

For many extensions, registrars now redact personal details by default or offer privacy free. Paying extra for it is often unnecessary. Check what your registrar already includes.

The bottom line

Expensive renewals usually come down to an ended promotion, bundled extras or a pricey extension. Audit the bill, compare renewal rates and transfer if needed, but always keep the domain active. If you want one bill that covers hosting, SSL and support, see our plans.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my domain cheap the first year?

Registrars often use low introductory prices and charge a higher standard rate at renewal.

Can I move my domain to a cheaper company?

Yes, by transferring it. You need the domain unlocked and a transfer code.

What happens if my domain expires?

Your website and email stop working, and after a grace period someone else may register it.

Do I need to pay for domain privacy?

Often not. Many registrars include it free or redact details by default.
